Flower shops are little slices of heaven. A paradise where stress magically melts away and our senses are stimulated, we are diverted and everything is in the here and now. Once you are inside a flower shop, you really don’t want to leave and if you work there, you never have to!
Running a flower shop is not as easy at it seems. You have to know a lot about flora and fauna. If an owner does not, they could be ordering in flowers that wilt fast, lack luster and do not provide the pleasant aroma that a customer should rightfully expect.
Owners of flower shops need to have a blossoming creative and artistic side. Arrangement is what separates the good flower shops from the great ones. Although arrangement is to some degree instinctual, it also needs to be studied. Take the Japanese art of Ikebana as an example. This form of floral arrangement has been practiced since the 6th century.
This is unlike the western style of arrangement. The art of Ikebana is minimalist and focuses on the stems and leaves of the plant instead of the head of the plant.
Flower shops have to also understand the language of flowers. Each flower can represent a different emotion and even combinations of the same flower can mean different things. Not only will this knowledge impress clients, it will also keep them coming back to a flower shop in search of the perfect floral arrangement for an occasion.
